A new Erasmus Mundus Masters Course (EMMC) – CHOREOMUNDUS: International Master in Dance Knowledge, Practice and Heritage – has been awarded funding by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), an organisation that manages European funding opportunities and networks in the fields of education and training, citizenship, youth, audiovisual and culture. In 2011, the EACEA awarded fifteen new EMMCs, and only three in the Arts and Humanities.
Choreomundus is a two-year full-time programme, taught in English in Norway, France, Hungary and the UK. It is offered by a consortium of four universities: the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim (NTNU) as the coordinating institution; Université Blaise Pascal (UBP), Clermont-Ferrand, France; the Scientific University of Szeged, Hungary (SZTE); and the University of Roehampton, London, UK (URL), led respectively by Professors Egil Bakka, Georgiana Wierre-Gore, László Felföldi, and Andrée Grau. It draws upon already existing Masters programmes in ethnochoreology/the anthropology of dance in each of the four universities.
The programme investigates dance and other movement systems (ritual practices, martial arts, games and physical theatre) as Intangible Cultural Heritage within a transdisciplinary framework which includes input from the fields of Ethnochoreology, the Anthropology of Dance, Dance Studies, and Heritage Studies. The programme aims to provide the theoretical tools and practical skills necessary to observe, analyse, document, and evaluate dances within a cross-cultural perspective.
The final award is a joint degree awarded by all four institutions. The partners contribute equally to the whole programme and share responsibility for its delivery. The EACEA will award a number of scholarships to students from all parts of the world, including Europe. A BA or relevant professional experience will be the minimum requirement to apply.
