Postdoctoral Research Associate in Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland solicits applications for a postdoctoral researcher for an 18-month term beginning in January 2016. The position supports interdisciplinary research on two pilot projects working at the nexus of global climate change, cultural heritage, resource management, and governance. The Postdoctoral Associate will analyze socio-environmental relationships (past and present) related to water use and water security in the Middle East and North Africa region as part of an international multidisciplinary climate research team, whose purpose is to develop a regional center for water research and modeling. Job duties will involve travel to the MENA region. The Postdoctoral Associate will also investigate governance issues for cultural heritage resources in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation, including carbon management in heritage sites and practices.

The candidate must hold a Ph.D. in anthropology or a related field, with specialization in environmental change and/or cultural heritage, and have a demonstrable record of research and publication. Candidates should have a strong background in interdisciplinary research methods and/or working in multidisciplinary teams. In addition to conducting research on these topics, the successful candidate will contribute to major grant proposals, so applications should demonstrate previous funding success and/or experience in grant writing. The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr. Kathryn Lafrenz Samuels and Dr. L. Jen Shaffer.
